10 Daily Creative Exercises to Boost Your Artistic Skills

Just like so many other things in life, maintaining your creativity and honing your artistic skills requires regular practice and exploration. Your motivation to keep at it will ebb and flow, but incorporating daily creative exercises into your routine can help you stay sharp, inspired, and keep on improving your abilities. Here are some simple and effective exercises for you to try:

1. Sketching Daily

Spend 15-20 minutes each day sketching everyday objects around you. You’ll improve your observation skills and learn to capture different textures, shapes, and forms. Don’t forget to practice drawing things from various angles and perspectives to challenge yourself further.

2. Quick Gesture Drawings

Set a timer for 2-5 minutes and create quick gesture drawings of people or animals in motion. This practice helps you capture the essence and movement of your subjects, enhancing your ability to depict dynamic poses and actions. Get creative with how you represent the movement!

3. Colour Studies

You know we’re all about the science of colour and colour values over here at Tinted & Minted! Choose a colour palette and create small colour studies or swatches. Experiment with blending, shading, and creating gradients. This exercise helps you understand colour relationships and improves your ability to create harmonious compositions.

4. Blind Contour Drawing

Spend a few minutes doing blind contour drawings, where you draw the outline of an object without looking at your paper. This exercise trains your hand-eye coordination and forces you to focus on the details of your subject, and can sometimes cause an eruption of laughter.

5. One-Line Drawing

Challenge yourself to create a drawing using a single continuous line without lifting your pen or pencil from the paper. This exercise encourages creativity and helps you develop a more fluid and confident drawing style.

6. Creative Writing Prompts

Incorporate creative writing into your routine by responding to daily prompts. Write a short story, poem, or description based on the prompt. This practice can spark new ideas for your visual art and improve your storytelling skills.

7. Art Jounaling

Keep an art journal where you document your thoughts, ideas, and sketches. Dedicate a few minutes each day to adding new entries. Don’t be afraid to use alllll the tools in your Art Journal! It can really spark inspiration.

8. Photo Studies

Use photographs as references for your art. Choose a photo and recreate it using your preferred medium. Focus on capturing the details, lighting, and mood of the image. This exercise improves your ability to work from references and develop your own style.

9. Mind Mapping

Create mind maps to explore new concepts and ideas for your art projects. Start with a central theme and branch out with related ideas, words, and images. Mind mapping encourages brainstorming and helps you organize your thoughts creatively.

10. Collaborative Art

Engage in collaborative art projects with other artists, either online or in person. Create joint pieces, exchange sketchbooks, or contribute to a shared mural. Collaboration exposes you to new techniques and perspectives, enhancing your creative growth.

Incorporating daily exercises into your routine can help you stay creatively active, continuously improve your skills, and maintain a fresh perspective on your art. Remember, the key is to give yourself permission – permission to spend just a few minutes each day with your Art Journal AND permission to make ugly creations so you can eventually make one that makes your heart sing.
