WEEK 7: NETWORKING AND BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS
Networking is a word that tends to give people a case of the ICKIES! And yet, here we are, about to tell you that it’s an I-C-K-Y necessity for today’s aspiring artist. If you haven’t looked at any of the other steps we’ve covered so far in weeks 1-6 of the ‘Concept to Launch’ series, now would be a great time to GO HERE and start from the beginning.
We may, or may not, be giving you a way to put off getting into this ewwww topic. We’ll never tell.
You’re still here, so, let’s talk about how you can build strong connections with other artists, galleries, and buyers. Here are some ideas to effectively network and build lasting relationships in the art world.
- Attend Art Events
- Exhibitions and Fairs: Attend local and national art exhibitions and fairs. This is a great way to meet other artists and potential buyers.
- Workshops and Classes: Participate in workshops and classes to learn new skills and network with like-minded individuals.
- Join Artist Communities
- Online Forums: Join online communities and forums like DeviantArt and WetCanvas. Engage in discussions and share your work.
- Local Art Groups: Join local art groups and associations. Attend meetings and participate in group exhibitions.
- Collaborate with Other Artists
- Joint Projects: Collaborate on joint projects or exhibitions. This can increase your exposure and introduce you to new audiences.
- Artist Residencies: Apply for artist residencies to work alongside other artists and build connections.
- Engage with Galleries
- Gallery Visits: Visit galleries and introduce yourself to gallery owners. Show interest in their exhibitions and artists.
- Portfolio Reviews: Ask for portfolio reviews and feedback from gallery owners. This can open doors to future exhibitions.
- Leverage Social Media
- Direct Messages: Reach out to artists and influencers on social media. Engage with their content and start conversations.
- Collaborations: Collaborate with social media influencers and bloggers to increase your reach.
- Follow Up and Maintain Relationships
- Follow Up: Follow up with people you meet at events. Send a friendly email or message to keep the connection alive.
- Maintain Contact: Keep in touch with your network. Send holiday cards, invite them to your exhibitions, and engage with their work.
Really, networking is just being intentionally social. Just like we recommend with most things that we don’t like to do, but need to do to grow a successful art business, we’re going to remind you to do what you can to make this part of it as creative and fun as you can.
Next week, it’s time to focus more on marketing your art. Join us back here as we explore various marketing strategies to promote your work and attract more buyers.
In the meantime, if you’re feeling a little disconnected from your art practice, give our Colour My Numbers tool a try. It’s free to download here.
